about
drowning seagull is an attempt to aid in the appreciation of the album - that oh-so-under-appreciated-these-days work of art. This site is a collection of very personal reviews of albums from the last twenty or so years that have struck me in that special way, that only serious music lovers can appreciate. My hope is that hopefully you will come across something new to you on this site, that you find you will love.
As mentioned, drowning seagull’s focus is on the album as a medium. Anyone can slap a dozen songs on a CD, but I’m talking about the album as a unified and cohesive holistic entity. Please note - this doesn’t necessarily mean I’m reviewing concept albums only - I think that is a corny term anyway - but simply an album as a collection of related tracks carefully and lovingly compiled in a meaningful and deliberate order. Even the artwork accompanying the album is a part of the physical product. Yes, that’s right, an album as a physical product - it may be old skool, but downloading crap quality mp3’s onto your ipod is no match for holding a work of art in your hot little hands.
What’s that you say? An album should refer only to a vinyl LP? Well, to be honest, I love the sound and feel of vinyl as much as any audiophile, but the impracticality of the medium means that the majority of albums I own are on compact disc format. I won’t deny, there is nothing quite as fun as spending an evening listening to LPs with a good set of headphones and the lights dimmed. But most reviews on this site are based on compact disc versions of the albums, and I’m not big on the pretentiousness that can be sometimes fairly associated with vinyloholics.
What makes me qualified to write these reviews? Well, to be blunt, nothing more than an honest appreciation for great music. I am fortunate that along with my inquisitive nature for finding music that strikes me in a unique fashion, I have spent a number of years working in the music industry, both in retail and management. Being around so many people with a similar passion for outstanding music is immense fun. A passion for music rings true the phrase that “the more you know, the more you don’t know” - the journey of discovery is where so much of the fun lies. And herein we return to the original point of this site - hopefully I can aid you in discovering something new and special to you - and hopefully you can bring something new and fantastic to my attention, too!
